Rainbow watercolour cat with hearts on an arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cat stretches along the arm with its tail curled upward, outlined in black and filled with soft rainbow washes of pink, yellow, green, blue and purple. Small red hearts and loose ink splashes sit beside its head. The collage shows the same tattoo from three angles, with the colour fading softly into the skin at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The cat had been stretched along the lowest bough of the Discovery tree since breakfast, flat as a dropped scarf, and Nell's grandmother said it was the only creature on the farm that had never once done a day's work. Nell hauled the last crate of windfalls onto the cart and told her she was wrong. Sorrel had done plenty of work. She had walked through the paint pots the Women's Institute left drying on the churchyard wall, so now she was pink at the shoulder, yellow along the flank, green at the belly and blue to the tip of a tail that curled up like a question nobody had asked. The village children called her the Rainbow Cat. Nell called her a nuisance.

By late afternoon the wasps had found the fallen fruit and the air over the grass hummed like a loose wire. Across the lane, the Pryce boy's tabby sat on the orchard wall and watched Sorrel with the seriousness of a magistrate. Sorrel lifted her head, tasted the air, and stretched a little further along the bough, which Nell thought was rude. The tabby did not move. Neither did Sorrel. Something passed between them that Nell was too sunburnt to follow.
She climbed the ladder for the last of the Bramleys because the cart needed to be full before her father came back from the mart. A small red heart of ink-bright petal came loose from the blossom and drifted down past the cat's ear. Nell caught it on her palm, then let it go. When she looked again the tabby had jumped down into the long grass and Sorrel was still watching the gap in the wall where he had gone, tail lifting, patient as a clock. Nell bit into an apple, sour and cold from the shade, and decided to leave the cat where she was.
