You will have heard the big top came down at Coldharbour on Sunday, and I would rather you heard it from me than from the Gazette. Forty-one seats were filled for the afternoon show. I counted them from the ring, the way Father taught us to count a crowd before he let the band strike up. Most of the seats held children someone's nan had brought along, and the rest were pigeons that have taken over the far stand.

Ambrose did his stone lift anyway. You remember him, the Lancastrian with knuckles like conkers. He walked out in that old black cape, the one Mother patched with bin liner, and stood square in the middle of the field with the empty tiers behind him. Then he raised one fist at the sky, no drum roll, no music, and held it there until the wind dropped. Nobody clapped. A small boy in a red anorak clapped on his own, and that was the only sound in the whole ground.

I am not writing to ask for money. I am writing because I think we should sell the wagons to the Hendersons before the spring fair, and I wanted you to hear it in my handwriting. Ambrose has offered to stay on as their doorman. He says he has been waiting thirty years for a job where he can stand still.
