The band kept playing, mind, because Lenny Cole has never once stopped a tune for anything short of fire.

Then the black bird came in through the open fire door, the one Mr Dunn props with a bucket every night. Nobody knew where it had come from. It went straight up to the chandelier, the big one with half its crystals missing, and sat there with its wings spread wide as a coat being shaken out, watching us dance underneath as if it had paid for a ticket of its own. I swear every feather had soot-grey shadows layered along it, like someone had worked over it with a fine brush and a patient hand.

Eddie didn't dance after that. He stood by the cloakroom with his hat in his hands and kept saying his gran used to claim a raven in the hall means someone is about to leave. I told him that was nonsense, and then the bird dropped off the chandelier, glided the length of the floor just above our heads, and slipped out through the door into the rain.

Come home for Easter, love. I'll save you the chair nearest the window, and I'll tell you the rest of it properly.
