The dragon had not been seen in Harrowmere since the spring the mill burned, so when old Mrs Ebbing swore she had heard it scraping claws along the slate roof of the chapel, nobody took her seriously except her grandson Tobias, who was nine and believed everything.

He went up the hill at dusk with a tin of boiled sweets and a torch that kept dying. The gorse smelled of pennies. Halfway up he found a trail of shed scales, each as big as a dinner plate, black at the rim and gold at the heart, and they were still warm. The higher he climbed, the more the air shimmered red, as if someone had left a forge door open somewhere beyond the ridge.

At the quarry he found the dragon coiled around the broken winch, its head resting on its own tail, eyes half shut. It did not look fierce. It looked tired, and its breath came out in slow curls that rose and thinned like smoke from a dying fire. Tobias held out the tin. The dragon considered it for a long time, then breathed over it, and every sweet inside turned into a small gold coin.

Tobias walked home with his pockets heavy and told no one, not even his grandmother, who only nodded when he came in and said, "Well, it always did like a fair trade." By the end of the month the chapel had a new roof, and the mill chimney stood cold and clean against the hill.
