Red guardian lion on upper arm
Japanese · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A red guardian lion with a grey-shaded ornate collar and a blue bell sits over a gold lattice-patterned ball, set against swirling grey shading. The lion has detailed curled mane, fine teeth and shaded paws, giving a three-dimensional look. Red and gold dominate the colour palette, with grey and black used for the background and shadows.

The paint on the lion's left ear had flaked again, so Mrs Okafor sent her grandson up the ladder with a tin of vermilion before the boats came in for the festival. Idris worked slowly, the way she had taught him, dabbing colour into the curls of the mane until the stone looked less like a dog left out in the rain and more like something that expected to be obeyed.

Up close he could see the gold lattice of the ball more clearly, every diamond cut by hands that must have been very patient. Under the lion's left forepaw the ball had worked loose from its cradle. When he lifted it, something inside knocked against the carved walls. A folded slip of paper, brittle as a moth's wing, had been tucked into a hollow no bigger than his thumb. The ink gave a name, then a sum, then a date in 1931, and beneath them, in a different hand, a single word: returned.
He sat on the plinth a long time with the ball warm in his palms. The bell on the collar gave one dull clank as the wind shifted. Idris understood then that the lion had never been guarding the harbour so much as keeping an account, and that the account was still open. He folded the slip back into its hollow, pressed the lattice shut, and climbed down to fetch the tin.
By dusk the boats were threading through the gap in the breakwater, red sails bright against the grey water. Idris stood beneath the lion and rang the bell with his own hand, once, and the note carried out over the harbour like a name being called.
