Red lilies with swirls on upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
Two red lily flowers are shaded with soft highlights and dark crimson depths, with fine black linework stems and curling scrollwork extending above and below them. The flowers form the focal point, with the black swirls framing the design diagonally across the upper back. Colour is dominated by red, with grey and black shading giving the petals volume.

Nobody on the island liked the lilies. They grew too fast and too red, and they climbed the whitewashed tower the way ivy climbs a church, sending out tendrils that the wind bent into curls and spirals. Old Tam Rennie said the curls were counting something. He stood at the foot of the tower with his cap in his hands and traced them with one finger, murmuring numbers under his breath, and when he reached the top he would start again.
The keeper's wife did not argue with him. She cut the flowers every Sunday and laid them on the rock where the boat had gone under, and every Sunday the stems came back thicker. In November a storm tore the gallery rail away and the lamp went dark for three nights, but the lilies kept their red heads turned to the water, and no boat was lost.
By February Tam had reached the top of his count. He came up the path with his cap in his hands and told her the last curl ended in a bare stem with no bloom on it. The keeper's wife nodded, took her shears from her apron, and went out to cut it herself.
