Red phoenix on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A phoenix in flight is drawn in bold, solid red and orange ink with tapering wing feathers and a long, flame-like tail that curls down and to the left. The linework is heavy and the colour fills are even, with the lighter orange shading toward the wing tips and tail. The bird sits diagonally on smooth, pale skin against a dark background at the edge of the frame.

The boats came in low that winter, riding heavy with herring, and the harbour master at Skerrow Quay kept a lamp burning for the ones still out past the reef. Old Maud Tallis said the lamp was wasted. The sea took what it wanted, she said, and a light only showed it where to look.

Her grandson Ewan did not argue. He was twelve and had seen a bird come down over the water the evening before, red as a coal, its tail trailing sparks that did not go out when they touched the waves. It had circled the Brenna Lass twice, then folded its wings and dropped toward the reef like a stone. Nobody else had seen it. The men said he had been looking at the sunset too long.
That night the Brenna Lass limped into the quay with a split mast and four men aboard, every one of them half frozen. Maud counted them twice, then counted the boat. Something had been lighting the rigging from underneath, a faint orange glow along the ropes, though the lamp was out. The skipper swore a bird had perched on the bowsprit until the reef was behind them, then lifted off with a sound like a struck match.
Ewan went down to the water at dawn. On the wet stones, where the tide had pulled back, lay one red feather, long and tapered, its tip still warm. He carried it home in his coat and did not tell his grandmother. She would have said it was wasted, and he had decided, for once, that she was wrong.
