The signal box key had been in Hester Mallow's apron pocket since six, heavy as a cold pear, and she kept touching it the way other women touch a wedding ring. Below the bridge the goods yard rang with the new cranes. Above it, on the telegraph wire, a robin had been scolding her for a quarter of an hour.

"You'll have the whole station up," said Tom Garrity, the porter, leaning on his broom. "He's only a bird."

"He's been at the Ashby mill sacks since Lent," she said. The sacks were stacked by the siding, split where the blue tits had pecked through to the grain and then flown off in a flicker of blue, back to the hedge where the fields began.

The last train on the old line was due at eleven. Hester had been asked to ride it to the junction and hand the key over to the men from the council, who would lock the box for good and send the levers to a museum in Derby. She had polished those handles every morning for thirty-one years, and she wanted to leave them as she found them.

At the platform's end she unlocked the door one final time. The robin flew in ahead of her and settled on the bell rope, its breast the colour of a struck match, and it did not leave until the whistle sounded down the line. Hester pulled the last lever. Outside, the wheat bent in the wind like a crowd turning to watch, and she turned the key once more in the lock, for luck, and left it there.
