Rose, barbed wire and dagger forearm sleeve
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A man crouches in black jeans and a pink t-shirt, with a forearm sleeve tattoo as the main subject. The design includes a shaded rose, coiled barbed wire, a dagger and a bank of clouds. The work uses black and grey shading with soft tonal gradients and bold outlines, and the sleeve fills the forearm from wrist to elbow.

Nan kept the allotment behind the gasworks for thirty-one years, and she never once let anyone cut the rose that grew up through the wire fence at the bottom. Dad wanted it gone. He said the barbs would take your fingers off if you reached for the hips, and he was right, but Nan only told him to mind his own hands.

The summer the council sent men with cutters, she stood at the gate in her good coat with a kitchen knife tucked in her apron pocket. Not to threaten anyone, she said, just so they knew she had one. Mr Fenwick from the parish office laughed until he saw her face. Then he rolled his shirt sleeve up and showed her the white scar from his own father's fence, a line as thin as a blade's edge, and asked whether she'd like him to leave the bottom corner alone.
They left it. Clouds came in low over the gasworks that evening, heavy and bruised, and the rain held off until Nan had walked the length of the plot pulling bindweed out of the beans. She found the rose already dropping its last petals onto the wire, each one snagged on a barb like a small pink flag.
Dad came down with the torch at dusk. He didn't mention the fence. He cut one stem, very carefully, and slipped it into her coat pocket beside the knife.
