Rose with buds and leaves on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large open rose sits at the centre of the design, with a bud at the upper left, a second flower lower down and several serrated leaves on thin stems. The linework is bold black outline with fine hatching on the petals and leaves, and small dot clusters scattered around the flowers. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a softly blurred background, with the design wrapping along the inner forearm.

The rose had been climbing the side of the Harrow Court flats since before anyone on the fourteenth floor could remember, and Mrs Okonedo swore it had moved two windows to the left the week the lift broke down. Maisie Dunn pressed her palm against the cold glass of the landing and watched the bloom at the top of the vine open a little more, the way it always did when someone was about to leave.

Her brother had gone to Leeds in March with one bag and a promise to send money, and nobody had seen the rose do anything dramatic about it. It had simply grown. Ivy from the car park had tried to crowd it out, and the council man with the strimmer had cut it back twice, yet every morning there were fresh leaves on the thin stems, serrated and glossy, and a bud at the upper edge that never quite split. Maisie had started leaving a saucer of rainwater on the windowsill for it, the way her nan used to with the geraniums.
On Thursday the bud finally loosened. Its petals came apart slowly, like someone unpicking a hem, and the open heart of it caught the light off the car park lamps. Beneath it, a small knot of dark dots had gathered on the brickwork, as though the rain had decided to stay.
Maisie picked up the phone and rang the number she had never once dialled. "It's flowering," she said, when a voice answered. "You'll want to come home and see it."
