Mrs Ada Pether swore the cat had learnt the trick from the chalkboard. Every Saturday at the Harbour Market, Kitty sat on the back of the crab stall with her tail wrapped round her feet, and every Saturday some visiting man in a yachting cap leaned over to stroke her and got a sprat's worth of attitude for his trouble.

This particular Saturday it was a gangly lad from the boatyard, Tomasz, who bet his mate a shilling he could get the cat to eat a whole cockle. The mate laughed and fished one out of the bucket. Kitty watched the cockle the way a magistrate watches a liar. Then she stood, stretched, and walked the length of the stall with her nose in the air, stopping in front of the lad as if to inspect his boots.

"Go on, then," said Ada, not looking up from her scales. "She's only waiting for you to ask nicely."

He crouched down and said, very seriously, "Kitty, would you taste this?" The cat blinked once, slow as a bishop, and bit the cockle clean in half. Tomasz whooped and the mate groaned. Kitty swallowed, looked hard at the shilling in Tomasz's hand, and went back to her patch of sun.

That night Ada found the shilling under the cat's dish, rubbed bright on the bucket water, and decided the cat had won the argument, as she usually did.
