Dear Tomasz, the lamps on Canning Street have been out since Tuesday, so I write this by the gas ring in the back of the chandlery with my coat still on. Your mother asked me to tell you the cat is alive and has taken to sleeping on the ledger where the rent money used to be. She says it is a sign. I say it is a cat.

Mr Okafor from the ferry office came by yesterday with the last of your things from the locker. Under the folded oilskin he found the notebook you swore you had burned, and in it the line you copied from the church wall at Birkenhead, the one about the tide not asking leave of the stones. You wrote it out four times, each one more slanted than the last, as if the letters were trying to get off the page before you did. I have kept it in my breast pocket since, not because I understand it but because it is the only thing of yours that talks back.

Here is what I have decided. On Saturday I will walk down to the river at the turn of the night, when the ferry lights are dim and the water goes black as ink, and I will read your line aloud once for each of your four attempts. If the tide answers, I will know you are still somewhere on the far side of it, and I will come home and sleep. If it does not, I will still come home, because the cat needs feeding and somebody has to keep the lamp lit.

Write when you can. Use the blue ink. I can never read your pencil.

Yours, Ada
