Serenity Prayer lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm carrying a block of black lettering that reads the Serenity Prayer, with the words SERENITY, COURAGE and WISDOM set in larger serif capitals. The smaller lines are in a fine italic script, and the ink is a crisp, even black with soft grey shading at the edges. The text is centred on the forearm against a blurred indoor background of a white bed and a dark floor, with a red trouser leg at the right.

The Bramley had split down the middle in February, a clean crack like a dropped plate, and Dad stood under it for a long time with his hands in his coat pockets. I brought him a mug of tea he didn't drink. Thirty years of his pruning had gone into that tree, and the storm had taken half of it in one night.

He wanted to cut the whole thing out before it came down on the shed. I couldn't argue with that, but I couldn't watch him do it either. So on Saturday I took my secateurs and a roll of grafting tape out to the sound side, where the wood was still green, and cut three scions no thicker than a pencil. Dad watched from the back step with his cap pulled low, saying nothing, which for him was an argument.

I bound them to a rootstock from the nursery in Hereford, slit and tied the way he had shown me when I was nine, and wrote the date on a lolly stick. I could not make the old trunk stand. I could make sure something of it kept going. He came down the path in the end and pressed the tape flat with his thumb, the way he used to press seed into a tray.

By June the grafts had taken, three pale shoots lifting from the mulch. The old Bramley came down in August with a chainsaw and a great deal of swearing from the man next door. Dad stood beside the stump and counted the rings out loud, then slid the lolly stick into his breast pocket and walked back up to the house.
