Skeletal mermaid holding a shell

Colour · Flash

A coloured illustration of a mermaid drawn as a skeleton, with a skull and ribcage, a long flowing hairstyle and a fishbone tail. She raises one bony hand to hold an open shell containing a pearl. Fine, feathered linework and soft pastel pinks, greens and greys create a delicate, painterly finish against a plain white background.

Mrs Hannah Penhale had counted the lamp's rotations for thirty-one years, and she knew by the sound of the gulls on the rail that the tide had turned early. The storm had left the rock glittering with weed. Her son Tom was across on the mainland for the funeral of his wife's father, which left her alone with the fog bell and the long low swell.

She went down the iron ladder at first light with a bucket and a gaff, meaning only to clear the kelp from the landing. Caught in the wrack below the lowest step was a shell the size of a saucer, open like a cupped palm, and inside it a pearl the grey of a winter moon. Beside it, tangled in ribbons of fine weed, lay a fan of ribs and a small skull polished pale by salt. Her mother had told her the old tale of the girl who sang to the boats and was drowned for her singing, and her mother had always said the sea keeps its own tally.

Hannah did not take the pearl. She lifted the skull out of the weed with two fingers, carried it up the ladder as carefully as a christening cup, and set it on the sill of the lamp room facing the water. Then she went back down for the shell and placed it in the bony hand she had not noticed was still curled around the stone.

That night, when Tom's boat came in on the flood, the beam swept across the bay and found the pearl glowing on the sill, held up in the window as if offered back to the boats.
