Skeleton couple embracing in a rope frame
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a woman with her hair in a bun, embraced by a skeleton man whose arm is tattooed with a rose and a skull. The woman's back is filled with floral patterns, and a man's shirt bears the word MISFITS. An oval rope border frames the couple, with a large rose and leaves across the bottom of the composition.

The bouncer at the Co-operative Hall had decided the pair were trouble before they reached the door, mostly because Frank had stopped to explain, very politely, that the band was running late and he had come all the way from the churchyard on the bus. Ada tugged his sleeve and pressed a ticket into the man's palm, a ticket she had stamped with a rose she drew herself in biro, and the bouncer stood aside without a word.

Inside, the dance floor was already crowded with people who had dressed for a funeral and then thought better of it. Ada wore her hair up in its tight bun, pinned with a jet comb, and she laughed at every bad joke the drummer made. Frank kept one arm across her shoulders, his good shirt buttoned to the collar, the word MISFITS stitched across the pocket in red thread by his sister, who had never once let him forget she did it.
The band finally came on at half eleven, three lads from Keighley who played like their amps owed them money. Frank asked Ada to dance and she said she would only if he promised not to fall apart halfway through the chorus. He promised. They swayed under a paper garland of fairy lights, turning slowly while the room blurred around them, and for three songs nobody in the hall looked twice at the bones.
When the last number ended and the caretaker began stacking chairs, Frank found a plastic rose someone had left on the stage and handed it to Ada. She said it was the only flower in Bradford that would last until spring. Outside, snow was coming down over the car park, and they walked home arm in arm, leaving two lines of footprints that the first flakes filled in almost as soon as they were made.
