The toll-keeper at Kessel Pass had one rule, carved above his door by his father: no traveller crosses the line of diamonds in the snow until they have named every debt they owe. Most named two and lied about the third. Marta Velde came up the road in March with a mule that had no bridle and a sack that clinked whenever the animal shifted.

She unpacked nine iron keys onto the table between them, each notched in a different pattern. "These open the gates at Lorn," she said. "My brother took them from the customs house before the snow closed the road. He died on the second night, still holding them." Anselm lifted one to the lamp and saw that the notches made small triangles, all pointing downhill, the way rain runs off a roof.
"That is a debt," he said. "Not yours, though." He opened the ledger his grandfather had kept. On a page dated to the year of the great thaw was a line about a man who came up the pass with keys just like these, and was let through because the keeper liked the sound of his singing. The keeper had written beside it: the keys go back to the valley, the man stays on this side.
In the morning Anselm walked her out to the snow and chalked the diamonds again, as he did every dawn. He told her to wait until the sun cleared the ridge before she stepped over. She waited with the keys in her coat. When the light came, the diamonds melted first, and the triangles stayed dark in the snow a little longer, pointing the way down into the valley, and Marta followed them.
