In the years after the long dark, when the orchard domes on Hallam Ring had gone to moss, the people kept their seed grain in a vault beneath the spindle. Its door was a padlock as big as a cart wheel, scrolled like a fern, and nobody living had seen its key. The keeper's son, Tobin Reeve, was told the key had gone into the ground with the first keeper, whose skull still sat on the lintel to watch the stores.

Tobin grew tired of watching his sister's cheeks go hollow, so one winter he took a lamp down the old shaft to the skull and sat beside it. The old women said the key was not lost but given, and that whoever asked for it must keep the bone company through a whole night without speaking. He sat until his teeth rattled and the lamp guttered. At first light the skull's jaw had come loose, and there in its gap lay a key of grey iron, cold as a river stone.

The lock turned hard, as if it had been waiting for a reason. Inside there were no sacks of wheat, only dust, and one ledger with a single line in a careful hand: Do not open for hunger. Open for the spring that comes after hunger. Tobin read it twice, then went up the shaft and told the village what it said.

They argued until the thaw. In the end they tipped the last dust into the furrows, and the old keeper's skull was lifted back onto the lintel, its jaw wired shut, with the key hung from its teeth on a cord. The spring came late but it came, and the people said the lock had kept the seed safe the only way it could, by making them wait.
