Skull with rose and scrollwork on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A shaded grey skull with a detailed eye sits at the centre of the design, cut diagonally by a sharp black edge. Black scrolls, leaves and swirls frame the skull, and a red rose-like form runs down the lower part of the arm. Smooth realistic shading on the skull contrasts with bold black linework and solid red accents.

The lock at Hatherton had been empty since dusk when you brought the boat in on the wrong side of the cut, and nobody came out to shout about it. The cabin sides were still tacky with varnish. You had painted the scrollwork freehand, black curls spilling over the gunwale like ironwork, and the roses on the back doors had bled into the grain so the red looked wet even now. The turps smell hung in the cabin like a sickroom.

Tobias had left you the boat, the debt, and the skull wrapped in a flour sack. He had dug it out of a flooded churchyard below Burton and claimed it was the reason the Trent never took a barge he'd painted. Its one eye was a pink glass bead set in bone, and in the lamplight the slate he'd propped behind it threw a hard black edge straight across the jaw, so the thing looked half asleep and half split. You had meant to sell it. Every evening you unwrapped it and told it what the day had cost.
Tonight the fog came up off the water before you'd finished the second tin of gloss. You sat on the stern with the skull on the tiller beside you and asked it, plainly, whether the boat was ready to be sold. The mist moved. The black scrolls on the cabin side seemed to lean out over the water the way the leaves curled on the skull's crown. You understood then that you had not been decorating the boat at all. You had been copying the shadow the skull made, and that shadow had been pointing downstream the whole time.
At first light you wiped the brush clean, wrapped the skull in its sack, and set it on the bow facing the way you had come. Then you cast off the rope and let the current take the boat west, roses first, toward the lock gates you had been avoiding since Tobias died.
