Your nan wouldn't come out. She said the sky had no business going dark at teatime and she'd rather sit with the kettle. So it was me and Harold Pye from the farm, two men with a biscuit tin of smoked glass between us, and the ewes watching as if we'd both lost our wits. The disc crept across the sun slow as a bad cold. Harold swore the air went thin and the birds stopped singing. I'll not argue with him, because I had my eye to the glass and noticed nothing but the edge of the light being bitten away.

When the rim burned bright again I wrote the last of it in that cramped shorthand, and I drew the ring with a gap at the top where the glass had fogged. That's the page I want you to look at. I never could make a circle close properly. Every time I tried, my hand wandered off to the left, so I gave up and let it stay broken.

So go on, ring her and tell her you've found it. Tell her the sun came back on schedule, and so did I.
