Stacked lettering on inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand raised toward the top of the frame, showing a short phrase in thin, stacked black capitals across the inner wrist. The letters are narrow and uneven in size, with some characters offset and stretched to fit the stack. The ink is solid black with clean, fine strokes, and the skin tone is warm under a dim, moody light. A checked shirt cuff sits at the bottom edge, and a dark kitchen background blurs behind the hand.

You find the words chalked on the inside of the ferry shed door, in your grandmother's hand, the letters crowded into a stack because the board was too narrow for them to sit in a line. IF NOT NOW it says, and then THEN WHEN underneath, as though she ran out of width and decided to keep going downward instead.

Mr Ferris has the engine running by six every morning, and he does not wait for anybody who is still deciding. 'Last crossing's a quarter to seven,' he says, not looking up from the coiled rope. 'Mainland's no nearer for being put off.' Gulls squabble over the fish boxes. Somewhere behind the harbour wall a dog barks at nothing, the way it has since you were small enough to be lifted over the gunwale.

You open the suitcase on the kitchen table and close it again. The tea has gone cold in the good cup. Her tide tables are still pinned above the stove, with pencil ticks beside the dates she sailed, and beside the last one, in the same careful hand, a question mark she never rubbed out. You look at it for longer than you mean to.

At ten to seven you carry the case down the slipway. The bow lifts, the rope slaps the wet stones, and the strip of black water begins to widen. Behind you the shed door is already dulling with rain and the chalk is softening, but the last word holds on a while longer, and you can still read it from the boat.
