Star cluster and swirls on a wrist
Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of five-pointed stars in purple, pink and blue, each outlined in black, with a large purple star at the centre. Thin black swirls and a curved tail trail from the stars, with soft grey shading behind the flourishes. The design sits vertically on the inner wrist against a plain background of a car seat and keys.

The snow had buried the north road by four o'clock, and by six Nell Harrow had counted the guests twice and still come up one short. Five lamps burned in the taproom of the Coldharbour Inn. Five stars, her father used to say, for the five roads that once met at its door, though only the south one was ever open now.

The sixth guest was a carter's boy of nine called Tobias, who had walked in behind a sack of flour and refused to sit down. He stood by the hearth with his cap in both hands, staring up at the ceiling where her father had painted the night sky the winter before he died. The paint had gone brown at the edges. A purple star the size of a cartwheel hung above the settle, ringed by smaller ones in pink and blue, and a looping black tail trailed from them into the rafters.
'That one's yours,' Nell said, pointing at the blue star. 'Papa always said the smallest star is the one that finds its way home first.' Tobias frowned. 'Stars don't find anything.' 'No,' she agreed, and fetched the chalk from behind the bar. She drew curls on the back of the door the way her father had taught her, one for every gust that had come off the moor that day.
By the time the last bell had rung, the boy was asleep under the settle with his cap over his face. Nell sat up with the lamps. Before dawn she climbed onto a barrel and dabbed one small blue star onto the ceiling beside her father's, a little crooked, the paint still wet, so that anyone who woke in the morning would know somebody had kept watch.
