Strength script on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells the word strength in flowing cursive script across the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with little shading. The photograph is taken straight on against a dark background, with the lettering centred and fully in focus.

Dear Mags,

The Palais was half empty again on Thursday, so Mr Okafor let me hang the coats for the whole of the last waltz, which means I have hours of thinking to report. Your letter came Tuesday, and I read the bit about Dad's chest three times before I could go on. Don't tell him I cried over the sugar bowl. He'd only say the kettle was on the boil and that's the end of it.
The band that plays here now is a quartet from Leeds, all sharp suits and no tune. Last night the bassist, a lanky boy with ink up both forearms, asked me to fetch a glass of water for his girl while she sorted her shoe strap. I passed the glass over and saw the word she'd had done on the inside of her wrist, written in that loopy copperplate you'd think belonged on a wedding card. Strength. Just that, small enough to hide under a watch. I thought it was a funny thing to carry about with you, a word for other people to read when you turn your hand over.
I've decided I'm going to stop waiting for someone to tell me what I'm made of. Tomorrow I'm taking the early bus to Harrogate to see the hospital about Dad myself, with my own questions written on the back of a ticket stub. Come with me if you can get the afternoon off. If you can't, I'll hold the ticket up to the window so you can see it from the lane.
Your loving sister, Nell
