A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Shift closer, the lot of you, the awning's leaking but the story won't wait for the weather. Eleven days the rain came down on Wenlock Street that spring, sideways off the canal, and under the tin roof of the fish market a sign-painter called Idris sat with a tin of ochre and nothing to paint. Nobody wanted signs in a flood. They wanted umbrellas and a dry pair of socks.

Then a girl came in dripping from the Thursday stalls, a bag of cracked eggs under one arm, and asked him to paint something that would make her laugh. She had a pinched little face and a scarf the colour of marmalade. Idris didn't ask why. He painted a sun first, round and fat with a grin, rays like the spokes of a cart wheel, and under it he lettered the words his mother used to call across the yard: Stay strong, beautiful. Things will get better. Then, because the girl was still scowling at the sky, he drew a cloud beside the sun with a face so put-upon it looked as though someone had sat on it, and gave it raindrops falling in a neat, careful line.
The girl pinned the board to the awning and went off with her eggs. Next morning the rain had stopped, though the cloud had not gone anywhere. Idris swore it had only been told. Three days after that the sun came up over the canal, and the girl came back for more eggs, and the board still said it may be stormy now, but it can't rain forever.
The cloud on that board is frowning yet, if you walk down Wenlock Street and look up. Nobody has the heart to repaint it.
