Swallows, anchor and roses design on wood

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A pyrographic design burned into a pale pine board shows two swallows at the top, a horizontal banner or ribbon across the centre, and an anchor with rope edging. Sunburst rays, stylised waves and roses fill the lower half. The work uses dark brown burned outlines and shading on a light wood surface, with bold, even linework.

The swallows came back to the harbour wall the same week the ferry stopped running, which Mrs Tulley took as a bad sign and Old Henry took as a good one. Between them they could never agree on anything, and that was how Pim Garrow came to be sent out to the lighthouse with a sack of nails, a jar of paraffin and a letter nobody would open until morning.

The keeper, a thin man called Dunstan Vey, had not spoken to anyone since the autumn. He took the letter without a word and put it in his coat. Then he showed Pim the lamp room, where the great lens turned slow as a clock, throwing its rays across the water in long bars of gold. He said the sunburst was the only thing that kept the boats honest. Pim asked what he meant, and Dunstan pointed to a drawing pinned on the wall: a board, an anchor, two birds and a ring of rope, all of it scorched brown on pale wood by someone who had clearly been patient.

That night the fog came in thick off the Sound and Pim climbed the iron stairs to help trim the wick. Below, a light was moving on the rocks, a lantern swung by a man who did not know the channel. Pim watched it bob and stop, bob and stop, and understood that the letter had been a warning, not a greeting.

He lit the lamp higher than he had ever dared. The rays swept out over the waves like the spokes of a wheel, and the swallows, which had no business flying in fog, came sweeping down the beams, one after another, straight towards the shore. The lantern on the rocks turned around and went home.
