Dear Nell, the road over Blackmoor Pass has been shut since Tuesday, so you will have to take my word that the sheep are still alive and the chimney has stopped smoking. Mr Haddow came down from the top field yesterday with his beard full of ice and a face like a shut gate, asking for the room over the stables. I gave it him gladly. A man who has lost his wife's garden to frost in one night does not need a view of the snow.

The room was Mother's sewing room once, and it still has her cards tacked to the wall, the ones she wrote out in her careful copperplate for the bakers' wives. One of them has been loose since August, and this morning I found it on the floor by the grate, face down. Three lines, in her hand: Accept what is. Let go of what was. Have faith in what will be. I stood there with the kettle going cold and thought how neatly she had folded all the sorrow of this place into something a person could carry in a pocket.

I took the card up to Mr Haddow on a tray with his tea. He read it twice, moved his lips over the last line, and asked whether I'd made it up myself. I said no, it was my mother's, and he nodded as if that settled a bill. Then he said the snow would be off the pass by Thursday and he supposed he had better go and see what was left of the garden.

I've put the card back in the frame, though the nail is bent now. Come at Easter if the road allows. Bring your own pocket for the words. You will need them more than you think. Your loving sister, Margaret.
