Tree and red heart on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A tree with feathered, hatched foliage spreads across the top of the arm, with a single thin line trunk running down the skin. A small solid red heart sits beneath the branches, and two small black and grey figures appear lower down, one standing upright and one close to the trunk's base. The linework is fine and mostly unshaded, with the red heart as the only colour, set against plain skin.

The ash came up through the flagstones of the old chapel the spring after the roof fell in, and by midsummer its thin grey trunk had reached the height of the gatehouse window. Nobody at Corrow Keep thought much of it except the fox. Every evening she sat in its shade with a scrap of mutton from the kitchen midden and talked to it the way other people talk to the weather, telling it which crows were thieves and which swallows had gone south without leave.

That autumn a red thing caught in the crook of the lowest branch, bright as a cherry and warm to look at. It was not a leaf. It was a heart of blown glass, cracked along one side, dropped by a steward's daughter who had watched the castle from the battlements all one summer and never once come down. The fox tried to carry it off and found it too heavy, so she left it where it hung and kept her watch beneath it through the frost.
In the spring the masons came with carts to take the stone for a new road. They pulled the gatehouse down a block at a time, and the fox stood between the carts and the tree until a foreman with a kind face lifted her out of the way with his boot and laughed at her. When the last wall was gone, the ash stood alone in a field of dock and nettle, its branches bare where the walls had shielded it.
The glass heart was never found. The carters said they had seen a fox sitting at the foot of a dead tree all winter, and that she had gone grey along the muzzle like an old dog. By the next May a single green shoot had pushed up through the roots, and the fox was there to greet it.
