Tree of life with birds and flowers across the back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A large tree with a twisting orange trunk spreads across the back, its branches filled with green leaves, red fruit, flowers and small birds. Roots and blue flowers sit at the base, with a light blue butterfly and bee nearby. Bold outlines and bright, saturated colour fill the design, which is set against the natural skin tone.

The tree would not fruit for a bride who arrived late, everyone in Dolna Lipa agreed, and so Mira ran the last stretch of the lane with her veil snagged on the gate latch and her shoes in her hand. Her cousin Vesna was already waiting at the wall, a pomegranate cradled in both palms, peering up into branches that had gone quiet since morning. Bees had found the blue flowers at the root. A butterfly the colour of skimmed milk turned slow circles over an upturned wheelbarrow.

Old Teta Ruzica had planted the tree the year her husband left for the mines. She grafted a sprig from her mother's orchard onto a wild root and swore that every branch would carry something: a bird for every song sung beneath it, a fruit for every promise kept in its shade. Nobody had ever counted the promises, but the birds had multiplied each spring, and Vesna insisted the red fruit was growing heavier. Mira told her not to believe everything she heard.
Ana, the groom's mother, stood at the gate with her arms folded. She had not yet decided whether to forgive the lateness, the veil, or the boy who had stayed in the square to finish a cigarette. Mira took the pomegranate from Vesna and split it open on the stone. Seeds spilled dark and bright into her palm, and she held them out, not to Ana, but up toward the branches, the way Teta had shown her.
A small blue bird dropped from the crown, took a seed from her fingers and vanished over the roofs. Ana made a sound that might have been a laugh. By dusk the tree had three new fruit hanging among the leaves, though nobody had seen them grow, and Ana was counting them out loud as if they were guests she had been expecting all along.
