Tree tattoo across shoulder and upper arm
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a tree with a sprawling canopy of thin, branching black lines that spread across the shoulder and down the upper arm. The twisted trunk is shaded with soft grey and dark tones, and roots extend downwards at the base. The photograph is taken from the side, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a blurred background.

The mainmast of the Clara Vane came out of a hillside above the Miño, and by the time we were three weeks out from Falmouth the old carpenter, Tobias Renn, had started talking to it. He said the grain still remembered weather. I took him for a drinker, but he was rarely drunk before the second bell, and he would press his palm flat against the wood and shut his eyes like a man listening at a door.

He showed me the rings one grey afternoon, tracing the tight ones near the heart with a thumbnail. Dry years, he said, and hard winters. Then the wide, generous years, when the tree had pushed its arms out as far as it could reach, toward a sea it never saw. Nobody who felled it had asked which way it wanted to lean. On the ninth night a squall took our fore topgallant, and the captain ordered the spare spar lashed up in its place. Renn went below with his adze and came back up with a face the colour of tallow.
The spar had split along a seam hidden under the bark. Inside, where the wood had healed over an old wound, a single root ran out sideways like a vein, and it pointed straight at the water. Renn sat on the hatch coaming and said nothing for an hour. When we raised the Bristol light he asked the bosun to put him ashore at Avonmouth, and he went up the Avon by coach with an acorn he had carried in his waistcoat since Galicia. I never learnt where he planted it. I only know that whenever the Clara Vane leans hard into a wind, the mast creaks in a way that sounds almost like a sigh of relief.
