Tribal arm and shoulder tattoo
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black tribal design covers the upper arm and reaches over the shoulder, built from a bold spiral, sweeping tapered blades and a wide band of interlocking knotwork. The lines are solid and heavy, with dense black fill and little shading, and the design wraps around the arm. The image is in black and grey against bare skin, with a soft, plain background.

The gate had to be finished by Saturday, and Walter Pyle still had not decided where the iron should stop. He stood at the anvil in his vest, tapping a cold bar against his palm, while his daughter Irene swept scale off the flags and pretended not to watch him.

The commission was from Mr Ambrose at the big house up the cliff road, who wanted something to keep the sheep and the gossip out. Walter's father had drawn the pattern before the war: a tight spiral at the top like a whirlpool off Blackrock, blades sweeping down either side like the tide cutting into sand, and a wide band of knotwork across the middle, the same plaited look as the rope on the quay. Irene said the spiral should turn the other way, the way the water really went on the ebb. Walter told her to mind her own hammer.
He worked through the night with the bellows wheezing and the coals spitting orange into the dark. The spiral came out clean and the blades tapered just right under the drop hammer. But when he laid the knotwork band against the frame at dawn, one loop had closed on itself and would not sit. He reached for the chisel to cut it out and start again.
Irene caught his wrist. She showed him the small gap she had left in the plait the previous afternoon, a place where a bar had been bent and never welded, and he saw that the loop only held because of it. By noon the gate hung at the top of the cliff road. When the wind came off the sea, the band rang softly, and Walter stood with his hand on the iron, listening.
