Tribal stingray design across the upper back
Blackwork · Back · Mixed · Photo
A symmetrical tribal design covers the upper back, with a central spine-like form, curling spirals and a broad outline suggesting a stingray or manta shape. The linework is bold black with dense dot and line infill in the wings and borders. Small areas of red ink add accents within the central spirals and lower sections, while the rest of the tattoo is black and grey.

Dear Tomas,

The night boats came in late again, so I walked down to the fish market at Mercer Quay with the lamps still buzzing and found Aroha's uncle hosing down a ray the width of a kitchen table. Its wings lay folded like wet paper and the barb rested across the slab like a snapped oar. Nobody talks much at that hour. They just work, and I stood by the ice bins long enough to notice how the grey skin carried its own pattern, the same curls Nan used to trace on the steamed glass of the bus shelter when we waited for her.
Aroha says a manta is a mark kept in the spine, the line that holds a family upright when the weather is bad. Her uncle said it more bluntly. He wanted me to hold the knife while he opened the cartilage, because the cut has to be made by someone who has a reason to be there. I said I had no reason, and he shrugged and said that was fair, and handed me the knife anyway. When he sliced through the first wing, something dark and red ran into the spirals and filled them, and he laughed and said that was the bit that made it ours.
I have the barb in my coat pocket now. It keeps catching on the lining, which is how I know it's still there. Tell Mum I'll be on the early train, and tell her not to start the rosary until I've had a bath and stopped smelling of the quay.
Love, Nina
