The green dragon had been sulking in the pine gully since the first frost, and the grey one had taken to blowing smoke across the pass just to make him cough. Then the snow came early and sealed the pass, and Liang Mei, a carter bringing rice wine up to the inn, found herself stranded at the bend with her mule refusing every step. The wind was rising. Clouds poured down the slope like wet wool, and out of them came a green shape and a grey one, neither willing to be the first to turn back.

They fought the storm the only way they knew, by fighting each other. The green dragon's breath melted a channel through the drifts while the grey one's smoke lifted the snow off the road in soft white heaps, and somewhere in the tangle of their tails a pink petal came loose from the orchard below and settled on Liang Mei's sleeve. By dawn the road was clear, and the two dragons were coiled around the inn's gateposts, tails knotted tight.

Wen, pouring tea for the carter, swore the pearl had been sitting in the grey dragon's mouth all along, and that the green one had been too proud to look. Liang Mei didn't argue. She drank her tea, watched the two of them slowly unwind into the cloud, and left the gate open for the next traveller.
