Two skulls and red flowers on a back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
Two shaded human skulls overlap at the centre of the design, with a dark splatter spreading to their left. Red daisy-like flowers sit below and beside the skulls, linked by black filigree swirls and leaves that extend up towards the shoulder. The skulls are rendered in soft grey tones with smooth gradients, while the flowers use warm red and orange shading against the pale skin, and a small dark character sits at the top left.

The coal dust had settled on the lintel again by the time Maggie Rees finished her tea, a fine black bloom she wiped away with the side of her hand before filling the kettle a second time. Outside, the winding wheel at Cwm Du had stopped for the shift change, and the silence sat on the valley like a held breath.

Her husband Evan and his brother Ifor had gone down together in the spring of 1951, cutting the same face, and the roof had come in on them both. The chapel masons had run short of granite that year, so the two of them shared one stone, and Maggie had never liked the arrangement or said so. Evan had carved a pair of small skulls from a length of old pit prop the winter before, a joke he never explained, and she kept them in the dresser drawer wrapped in flannel. She took them out now and set them side by side on the oilcloth, angled towards each other as if they had something to settle.
Behind the chapel, the spoil tip where nothing had grown in thirty years was blooming red. The men called it the Cwm's bad luck and crossed the road to avoid it. Maggie walked up that evening with a trowel and her boots unlaced, and found the flowers thick among the shale, daisy-faced and rust-coloured, twining through the black ferns that had crept up from the drains. She knelt, dug one out with its roots intact, and carried it home in her apron pocket.
She put it in a jar beside the skulls and watched the petals open in the lamplight. Then she tied on her scarf, took the lamp from its hook, and went down the hill to the lamp room, where the night shift was already waiting for her to check their tokens.
