Right, sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you remember the Hallowe'en when Dorothy Penhale set the gym curtains alight. That's the trouble with reunions: everyone keeps the wrong bits.

Let me tell you about the year the bottles came to Ashby Grange. Nobody would own up to buying them, but there they were on the top shelf of the chemistry room, five glass apothecary jars, each with a wax-sealed stopper and a paper label bearing a capital R. A scorpion in one. A moth in another. A spider the size of a child's fist in the third, a little grey eel coiled in the fourth, and in the last a bat's skeleton folded like a fan.
Mr Quale, who taught us the periodic table and had a face like a dropped pudding, said they were remedies. Remedies for what, we asked. He just tapped the R and said, "For whatever's been bothering you." Then he went out to the car park, and the crows on the telegraph wire all turned to watch him go.
Ruth Ambler took the spider jar home that Friday. By the Monday her younger brother had stopped talking, but he had started counting the crows on the wire, and he never once got the same number twice. So I'll ask you plainly, the way that old man asked me: what have you been carrying since 1987 that you'd like to set down? The jars are still up there on the shelf, and I hear the new caretaker doesn't ask questions.
