Virgo skull spectre design
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a skull with a ghostly, draped form beneath it, wrapped by a twisted rope that loops around the figure. Sprigs of wheat or leaves sit on either side, and a dotted arc floats above the head. The black ink linework is combined with soft grey shading on the skull and cloak, and the composition is centred with the title Virgo and a short line of italic text beneath.

Dear Mabel, you asked in your last letter whether the lady of Coldharbour Field still walks the stubble after dark, and I can tell you the honest answer, which is that she has taken to sitting down. I found her on the lych gate at St Ebba's on Tuesday, wrapped three times round in that old bell rope the sexton swore he'd thrown on the bonfire in 1911. Her cloak had gone to ribbons at the hem and there were sheaves of wheat tucked under the rope, dry as paper, the way the village leaves them for harvest.

She told me she has been haunting the parish since the barley failed in the year of the great frost, and that nobody in all that time has asked her name. I asked it. She said it sounded like the stir of chaff when the wind comes off the downs, and then she laughed, which I did not expect from a skull. She said the dots of light over the church tower had been keeping her company since she died, counting her out the way the reaper counts rows, and that she was tired of counting.
So on Saturday, at the supper, I climbed up and unpicked the rope knot by knot while the fiddler played Sweet Lavender and the vicar pretended not to watch. It came away warm, like a loaf fresh from the oven. She drifted up past the weathervane, thinner each time I looked, and the last thing I saw was one sprig of wheat caught on the gate where she'd been.
I have it pressed in this letter. Come and see the field before the plough gets to it. Your loving sister, Ruth.
