Wanderlust script and compass rose

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded compass rose sits to the right of the cursive word Wanderlust, with N, E, S and W marked around the dial. The compass has a fine outer ring, a central eight-point star and grey shading that gives it depth, while the lettering uses thin, flowing black linework. The skin is lit warmly against a fabric edge at the top of the frame.

The chart table in the wheelhouse of the Marigold Rose smelled of diesel and wet wool, and Tomasz had spent the whole night hunched over it with a brass dividers and a pencil stub worn to nothing. The skipper had gone below at two. Somewhere off the Dogger the sea had gone flat and oily, and the boat drifted with her nets up while the gulls fell asleep on the rail.

He had been wrong about the set of the tide. Everyone was wrong about it that spring, Mrs Pargeter in the chandlery said, because the sandbanks kept moving like sleeping dogs. Tomasz had not been wrong about the compass, though. He had turned the old brass rose on the bulkhead a hundred times since he was fourteen, and the needle always wanted the same thing: north, steady, unbothered by anybody's opinion of the weather.

At first light he wrote the bearing on the back of a fish ticket, folded it twice, and tucked it under the glass of the binnacle where the skipper would find it. Then he went out on deck and watched the sun lift itself out of the water, red as a cut, and turned his face west, towards Hull, where a girl named Ines was waiting with a letter he had not yet written.

When the skipper came up with his tea, the boat was already turning for home.
