Watercolour barn owl perched on a branch
Colour · Photo
A barn owl perched on a thin branch, shown in three-quarter view with its head turned to one side and its eyes partly closed. The black linework is loose and sketched, with visible hatching and stray marks around the feathers and talons. Soft washes of purple, teal, pink and yellow fill the body and spread beyond the outlines, with small ink splatters across the head and wing.

The rain had washed the lime off the sign again, so Mabel Ostle climbed the ladder at dusk with a jar of violet and a brush worn down to three hairs. Below her the Fleece Inn's yard was already grey, and the barn owl that lived in the eaves had come out to watch, as it did every evening, with its eyes half shut as if it found her a bore.

She had been paid to paint a fox. The brewer wanted a red and clever fox for his new board, and she had sketched one in pencil on the Tuesday. But on the Wednesday the owl sat on the bracket above the door, close enough that she could see the pale heart of its face, and her pencil kept drifting to the bird instead. She laid the first wash on its breast, a little teal bleeding into the wood grain, then pink where the lamplight fell, then yellow for a sun that had set an hour before.
The brewer came out with his hands in his apron and said the owl was no good. Nobody paid for a bird that looked half asleep. Mabel said nothing and went on with the splatters, flicking ink from the tip of a quill across the head until the bird looked caught in a storm of its own making. The owl blinked slowly and did not leave.
When the paint dried, the sign showed a barn owl on a bare branch, its colours spilling past every line she had drawn. The brewer hung it anyway, because it was already up before he saw it properly. In the morning the washes had bled onto the lintel and the owl was gone, though a single violet feather lay on the step, not quite dry.
