Watercolour feather on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A feather is drawn in black fine linework with its vanes and quill outlined. Blue, turquoise, violet and pink ink washes spread outward from the feather in soft, splattered edges that resemble watercolour. The tattoo sits against a plain dark background, with the arm filling most of the frame.

The feather comes down on the wet deck of the Hannah Vey just as you're mixing the last of the blue. Gulls have been screaming over Scallow Quay since before dawn, and this one, grey with a black-tipped quill, has been shedding over the nets all week. You pick it up because it's the only clean thing on the boat. The quill is cold and fine as a pin.

Your paints are the leftovers from the fleet's summer refit: tins of blue meant for hulls, a violet your uncle bought for a dinghy that later sank, and the pink the harbourmaster insisted on for the lifebuoys. You dip the feather's vanes into the tins and press it to a scrap of paper. The colour bleeds outward where the wet sheet takes it, feathering into the grain, and the smell of the sea comes up off the page.
Ruth from the chandlery asks what you're making, and you say nothing yet. Out past the breakwater the boats come in low in the water, and you count them as they clear the harbour mouth. Eleven. Then twelve, when the Vey's engine finally catches on the swell. You wait at the quay with the paper drying on a bollard, the ink still running into little blue tails where the wind touches it.
When the boat ties up, Ruth is the first aboard. She finds the page pinned under a mooring stone and holds it up to the light. The black quill runs true down the middle, and the colour spills off it as though it has just come loose from the water. Nobody says anything. You fold the paper into the tin lid, wipe your hands, and go to help with the catch.
