Watercolour seahorse behind the ear

Other · Colour · Photo

A seahorse is shown in soft blue, green, purple and yellow ink, with diffused edges and splashes that suggest watercolour paint. The tattoo sits behind the ear, and the curled tail and snout are clearly defined against the skin. The colours fade gently toward the edges, and the ear and earrings frame the design on the right of the image.

Dear Marnie, the tide took my paint box on Tuesday, the good one with the cracked blue pan your mum gave me. I went down to the rock pools at Scarra Point with my jam jar and came back with nothing but wet knees, so I sat on the slipway and cried like a child until Old Tam came past with his barrow and asked what the matter was. I told him, and he laughed and said the sea keeps what it wants and gives back what it doesn't.

Next morning there was a seahorse in the lobster pot by the harbour wall, dead or nearly. Its tail was curled tight as a watch spring and its colours were running out of it, blue into green, green into the grey of the stone. I took it home in a teacup of seawater and sat with it at the kitchen table for the whole afternoon, dipping a brush in the last of my watercolours and trying to make the colour stay where it was. It never does, of course. The wet bleeds at the edges and you have to let it go.

I think that is what I have been trying to say since you left. Nothing holds still out here, not paint, not boats, not the people who promised to write more often. But the little thing in the teacup had its own clouds of colour, and it looked more itself as it faded.

I'm sending you the painting. Tam says the pot will come in on Friday with a fresh catch if I'm lucky. Come back at Easter. Bring the blue.
