Dear Ruth, The black ink went over on Tuesday, the whole jar of it, just as I was laying the orange onto the cabin doors. I swore loud enough to bring Mr Okafor's dog down to the towpath. But when the splatter dried in the lee of the lock, it looked like the sky after a bonfire, so I've left it be.

You'll want news of the boat. We're tied up below Thornbury lock with Dad's old Bolinder thumping through the night, and the river has gone the colour of weak tea since the rain. Each morning I wipe the wet glass and the reflections come out in pinks and blues, the way water takes a dye and carries it off. I tried to paint that onto the doors, the washes bleeding into one another, and the black keeps wanting to jump off the brush.

Mum says I'm wasting good paint. Maybe. Yesterday I walked the bank to the old wharf where you carved your initials, and found the stones scattered with black pebbles the floods had left behind. I counted nineteen before I stopped counting.

Come up at Easter if the lock is working. I'll show you the doors. Bring the good brushes, the ones you swore you'd never lend me. Tell me if the old sign still swings over the Crown, or if they've painted over the sky too.
