Watercolour style tattoo down a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A vertical abstract design runs from the elbow towards the wrist, built from flame-like or petal-like shapes in red, orange, yellow, pink and blue. The edges are soft and washed out, with loose splashes and fine dark lines suggesting a stem or branch. The arm is photographed from the front against a plain white t-shirt and a dark floor.

The path out of Hollin Wood is only a path if you keep your eyes on the ground, and your grandmother told you that the morning you went to fetch the dye-flower. Nobody else in Cragside would go. The fire-lilies grew in the bog below the old quarry, where the water turned the colour of weak tea and the frogs stopped singing when you came near, and the dyer had paid you in advance with a loaf and a promise.

You found the first clump by the stile, its stems splitting into crimson and saffron at the top as if something had caught light inside them. The petals would not sit still. Every time a breeze came through the birches they lifted, flicked, and settled a shade paler, so you never quite picked the same colour twice. You cut a stem with the bread knife and it bled a thin wash of pink onto your thumb, and you thought, she will be pleased, and then you heard the bell from the chapel, which had not rung in forty years.
You did not run. Running, your grandmother said, was how people got lost in the wood, so you walked slowly, cradling the stems against your chest while the blue crept into the sky behind you. At the quarry the frogs had gone. In their place a figure stood on the rim, tall and unhurried, holding a lantern of pale glass that threw orange over the water. It held out its hand, and you saw that the fingers were stems and the palm opened like a bloom.
"You have taken enough," it said, not unkindly. "Leave me the palest one and walk home by the light you carry." You knelt and laid the palest stem at its feet. When you reached the stile the wood was black on every side, but the colours in your hands glowed like coals, and the dyer's shop was still a mile off, waiting.
