The fox came across the channel on the ebb the spring my brother's boat failed to return. Nobody on Skerrow thought to ask why a creature with nine tails would swim a mile of cold water to reach us, though my mother said the flowers had sent for it. They grew only on the north shore then, great blue bells that the wind never bent, and the fox walked among them the way a magistrate walks through a market, slow and unhurried, noting everything.

I took it food, a split mackerel on a tin plate, and found it lying down with its head bowed over one bloom as though listening to a secret inside. When I set the plate down it did not lift its head. It only moved the palest of its tails and drew it across my wrist, cool as sea glass. I stood there until the light went grey and the plate was empty, and I did not once think to be afraid.
Jonah Pell's boat came in on the next tide, engine coughing, both men alive and furious about the fog. The fox was gone from the shore by then. Where it had slept the blue flowers had closed for the first time anyone could remember, and in the morning I pressed one between the pages of my mother's psalter, stem still damp, petals bruised the colour of a far-off storm. The book sits on my windowsill now. Some nights I open it just to check the flower is still blue.
