White spirit wolf with red wind lines
Japanese · Mixed · Flash
A white wolf-like creature curls across the page with its head turned to the left, marked with red lines on its face and a black circle behind its head. Red flowing lines rise above and wrap around its body and tail, with black leaves scattered around the figure. The painted shading is light and soft on the white fur, set against a plain brown kraft paper background.

Her grandson Tom thought it was foxes and said so loudly at the supper table. His sister Ada said nothing, but on the fourth night she took the lantern out herself and found the wolf lying in the lee of the hay barn, its tail curled round its feet like a loose rope, red threads of wind lifting off its back though the air was still. Black leaves lay about it in the snow, though there were no trees within a mile. It turned its head and looked at her, and she saw that the red marks on its face were the same as the ones her grandmother used to paint on the doorframe every spring to keep the sickness out.
Ada did not run. She set down the lantern and sat in the snow beside it, and they stayed that way until the church bell struck four. When she went back in, her hands were warm for the first time in a week, and the milk bowl was full again in the morning, though nobody had poured it.
The wolf came every winter after that, and the farm lost no more lambs to the cold, and when Ada grew old enough to be asked why, she said only that she had sat up with a guest once and been polite.
