Black and grey realism tattoo of a kneeling winged figure with light rays behind, covering the upper arm and shoulder.

Winged figure with light rays on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A kneeling winged figure with its arms raised fills the upper arm and shoulder, with feathered wings spread on either side. Soft shading and fine feather detail give the skin a realistic, sculpted look, and rocks and foliage sit at the base. Radiating light beams behind the figure fade into the shoulder, and the image is in black and grey ink.

Wren had been told not to climb the north tower after the rain, but the scaffold was already up and the lime mortar would not wait. Below her the courtyard of Hollin Keep was a puddle of slate and sky. She worked with a soft brush and a cold chisel, lifting moss from a carved panel that had lain face down in the rubble since the siege.

The panel showed a man kneeling on broken rock, his arms lifted towards a split in the clouds. Wings spread behind him in long, stacked feathers, and the light came down past him in bars so fine she had to tilt her head to see them. Someone had cut the figure with great patience and then, she thought, had grown ashamed of it, because the hands had been struck away at the wrists. Her grandfather called it the Kneeler and said the village had argued for two hundred years over whether it had been thrown down or had simply fallen.

She set the brush aside and pressed her palm against the stone where the fingers should have been. The rock was warm from the thin sun. Somewhere below, the chapel bell gave a single flat note, the one that meant the tide was turning on the causeway and the carts had to be off the sand by three.

She did not finish the hands that day. Instead she wrote the date on the lintel in pencil, then her own name, then the time the tide had turned. Before the light went she climbed down, leaving the panel to the rain and the bars of light that would not reach it again until morning.
