Winged helmet profile with oak leaves
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A woman's profile faces right, wearing a helmet topped with a large bird-like wing and a curved crest, with a hoop earring and long wavy hair. Below, oak leaves and acorns frame a shield bearing an angular mark, all rendered in fine engraved-style linework with shaded areas. The design is printed in sepia-brown ink on a textured, creased parchment background.

Shut that door behind you, the cold's in the yard already. No, leave the lamp where it is. Old Tobias Reeve always said the frost came up through the flagstones on the night of the first hard freeze, and that year it came early. The pigs were out in the high wood eating what the oaks had dropped, and the acorns were hard as shot that winter, which is how we knew it would be a bad one.

A woman came up the lane on the third morning of the cold, walking the old drove road with a shield slung across her back. A great curved wing rose off the crown of her helmet like a sickle blade, and it caught the light whenever she turned. She asked for nothing. She sat on the mounting block and watched the pigs come down to the gate, counting them the way a sergeant counts men, and when Tobias's girl brought her bread she broke it and handed half back.
She stayed nine days. Every dawn she went into the wood with a sack and came back with it heavy, and she showed the girl how to crack acorns between two stones and leach the bitterness out in running water. The mark on her shield was a thing she scratched into the byre door before she left, two strokes crossed by a third, and Tobias never painted over it.
In the spring the girl found an oak sprouting in the wet ditch by the gate, one green tongue pushing out of a split acorn. Tobias said nothing about it. He just fenced it off, and the pigs were never let near it. It's taller than the byre now, and that's the end of the story, so go on up to bed.
