Winged warrior angel on an upper arm sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder with a large scene centred on a winged figure in armour holding a spear and shield, standing above a writhing figure lower down. Smaller figures and wing shapes fill the background, with rendered musculature and carefully shaded folds in the cloth. The work is entirely in greys and black, with strong tonal contrast and soft gradients across the skin, and the photograph is taken in a dim, low-key setting.

Dear Nell,

We have been four weeks out of Valparaíso and the sea has not once been any colour but pewter. Mr Harrow says that is the Horn for you, that it takes the colour out of a man's eyes and gives it back in a different shade. I believe him now. The carpenter has spent a week repainting the figurehead in ash and lamp-black, which Captain Doyle says is a mourning colour and therefore suitable for a ship carrying our cargo.

The figure is a warrior with wings held wide, a spear raised over one shoulder and a round shield pressed to his chest. Below him, where the bowsprit dips into the swell, something is being trodden down. Mr Harrow calls it the dragon. The cook calls it a drowned Dutchman. I have decided it is nobody's business but the carpenter's, and he won't say.

Last Thursday the squall came off the starboard quarter with no warning, a wall of slate that tore the topgallants before anyone had boots on. I was sent out along the jib boom to free a fouled stay. Lashed to the spar with spray coming over in sheets, I looked back at that painted face and understood why the carpenter had made it so stern. Nobody aboard wants a cherub. We want something that will stand in the weather and not look away.

We cleared the stay. Nobody drowned. Doyle gave me an extra tot and said nothing, which from him is a sermon. I will post this at Montevideo if we put in. Tell Mother the cough is only the damp.

Your loving brother, Tom
