Woman portrait and dragon leg sleeve
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bare leg of a person standing in a grassy field, with a large tattoo covering the thigh and down to the calf. The thigh holds a woman's face framed by swirling dark hair, pearl-like beads and a feathered wing, while the calf shows a dragon or serpent with teal jewelled details. Bold colour in teal, green and blue sits alongside grey shading on the wing and creature, and the sunlit setting keeps the focus on the ink.

The lodger in the back attic had been drawing the same woman for three weeks before the tide brought the serpent in. I kept Seacombe Terrace the way my mother had, with taps that sang in the pipes and a card in the hall that said NO FISHING FROM THE WINDOWS. I didn't ask questions of men who paid in advance. Mr Vane paid in advance, in sixpences he kept in a Players tin.

He sketched on the backs of my rent books. A woman with hair that moved like weed in a rock pool, pearls strung at her throat like a rosary of small moons, and a wing coming off her shoulder in grey feathers he shaded with a pencil until his thumb went black. The serpent, he said, lived under the harbour wall where the lamps didn't reach. It had teal scales and a jewelled collar, and it liked to be drawn at low water when nobody was watching it draw.
On the last Tuesday of October I found his door open and the window streaming. The bed was made, the tin was on the sill, and the rent books lay in a neat stack. The top sketch showed the serpent coiled up the woman's leg, its eye turned towards the door, as if it had been waiting for someone to come up the stairs. Beside the tin lay one green bead, warm as a cup of tea. I put it in with the sixpences, because a debt is a debt, and went down to bolt the front door against the tide.
