X-wing starfighter over a compass rose
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
An X-wing starfighter is drawn in shaded black and grey, angled diagonally across a compass rose with N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W and NW labels. The ship has realistic shading and detail, while the compass uses bold linework, a circle and dotted guide lines. The design is centred on a plain skin tone with a soft white fabric background.

The fog came down off the Wash before four, and Maud Pelling had a grey craft with a cracked left wing sitting in the reeds at Hollow Drove, two hours of light and no radio. She sat in the cockpit with the hatch open and glared at the compass on the dashboard, which had spun twice since she landed and now wanted to point at the ditch.

Her father had built the rose. He painted it on the hangar door at Sallow Farm the year before he went off over the sea with the cargo boats, all eight points labelled in his neat capitals, a circle round the middle and dots for the guide lines. Nobody ever used it. Maud had taken it for decoration, the way he kept a brass sextant on the mantel that never left its box.
She climbed out, waded to the hangar with the mud sucking at her boots, and laid her palm flat on the door. The paint was cold. Beneath the N, where she had always assumed the lettering was just a flourish, a thin scratched line ran from the centre out toward the sea. Beside it, very small, he had written: keep the wing to the star you cannot see.
She found the south-east dot as a paler patch low in the cloud, where the fog thinned over the water, and lined the broken wing up on it the way the scratched line had told her. The engines caught on the third try. Going home, she kept the hatch open all the way, and when the Drove lights came up below her she laughed out loud at the old man's trick.
