Yes I'm Changing quote on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a single line of capitalised text, YES I'M CHANGING, set in a plain sans-serif typeface. The letters are solid black with slightly soft edges, and the skin around them shows little sign of redness or swelling. The arm is photographed outdoors in daylight against a striped top and a blurred sea and sand background.

Kieran, the lift on nine has been out since Tuesday, so I've been doing the stairs with the shopping like a mountain goat, and Mrs Okafor on eleven says I'm too old for it. I told her I'm not too old, I'm only slow. Your dad would have laughed.

You asked me on the phone whether I'd noticed you'd changed. I said you sounded like a stranger with my son's voice. Then you laughed and said yes, I'm changing, Mum, the way you'd say pass the salt. I've been turning it over since. On Saturday I went to the chippy and the girl behind the counter had a plaster over her knuckle and a book of crosswords under her arm, and I thought, good, she's the sort who'll get on.
The lads have painted over the tag on the bin store, the one with your name and the Gunners crest. Someone has scrawled a new one underneath in black capitals, neat as a shop sign, no name, just the words. I stood there with the bag going cold and read it three times. Could be anyone. Could be you, at two in the morning with a marker, telling the block what you've become.
Send me a photo of the sea when you get there. Not the flats, the sea. I'll pin it by the kettle next to the one of you at six with a shark's tooth round your neck. Love, Mum.
P.S. The lift is fixed. I took the stairs anyway.
