Abstract purple burst with black fractures

Other · Mixed · Photo

The central motif is an abstract burst with sharp black fractured lines radiating outwards from a small core. Soft purple and pink washes sit within the lines, with a lighter halo around the edges that makes the shape look raised against the skin. Green leaves are partly visible along the bottom of the frame.

Come closer, the fire's low and I'll not tell this twice. The annealer had gone cold at the Hollin glassworks, and Maud Tilly was still standing at its iron door at gone midnight, arms folded, waiting for the glass to tell her something. Eleven bowls had come out of that kiln that week, and ten were fine, grey-green and honest. The eleventh had cracked clean through as it cooled, a fine black line running out from the base like frost racing over a pond.

The foreman wanted it swept into the cullet bin. Maud wouldn't have it. She'd seen what the cold did when it went in too fast, and she'd seen the colour that had pooled in the flaw, a bloom of violet with rose bleeding into the edges, spreading out from the crack the way a flock lifts off a field all at once. She carried it home wrapped in her apron and set it on the sill over the sink, where the lamplight could get at it.

All that winter it caught the light and threw it back in splinters. Old Harrow from the counting house came by in February and offered her two shillings more than the bowl was worth, and she told him the crack was the best part, and he went away shaking his head. She never sold it. When she died the bowl went to her niece, who wrapped it in newspaper and carried it on a train to the coast, and I'm told it still sits on a sill there, cracked from one edge to the other, and every morning the sun comes through it and throws that same violet across the wall.
