Sketched ballerina tattoo on a calf

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A ballerina in mid-leap is drawn with loose, broken black linework that suggests the arms, legs and skirt rather than outlining them fully. Soft splashes of purple, pink, blue and teal sit around the tutu and upper body, fading into the skin. The design runs diagonally down the lower leg, with the dancer's extended foot near the bottom of the frame.

Sit down, all of you, the urn can wait a minute. You'll remember Miss Quayle's Thursday class in the old Methodist hall, where the sprung boards bounced whenever the coal lorry went by. Nell Tanner was the one who could clear the bench at the back without touching it. Nobody in Hatherley believed she'd leave, but she kept the letter from the academy in Leeds folded inside her gym shoe for a whole summer.

Her mother ran the dye works down by the lock, and that summer the vats were full of offcuts. Violet, rose, and a teal that stained your nails for a week. Nell begged a yard of each and sewed a skirt in the back kitchen with the wireless going, and when she put it on it looked poured rather than cut. She practised in the meadow after the works shut, leaping over the drying lines while the herons stood in the shallows and pretended not to watch.

The audition was on a Saturday. She didn't get in. She came home on the last bus with the skirt rolled under one arm, and nobody asked her how it went, which is how we knew. She stopped going to the hall. But every evening that autumn the herons lifted off the reeds when they heard the lock gate, and Nell would run at the meadow with her arms out and jump, and for one second she'd hang above the water with the whole sky behind her, all colour and no edges. Then she'd land in the mud, laughing, and walk home for her tea.
